One Past Midnight was created as my 4th Year Honours Project at Abertay University. The game aims to explore the interplay of gameplay, storytelling and visuals in the elicitation of player emotion. Inspired by experimental games such as Year Walk and The Sensational December Machine, players control a young woman as she takes an introspective walk down a railway line during a blizzard - experiencing her thoughts, feelings and memories through a thoughtful synthesis of game elements.
An empathetic link is also created via the game's experiential approach to controls - players must physically walk on the spot to move forward in the game, making innovative use of Nintendo's Wii Fit Balance Board to track their footsteps. Described as a literal on-rails walking simulator, the game has been praised for its unique and accessible approach to game and narrative design, along with its striking visual presentation.
